Hyundai Glovis joins hands with Swisslog for smarter logistics services
By Park Jae-hyuk
Hyundai Glovis has decided to enter the smart logistics market by providing its clients with solutions based on artificial intelligence, big data and robotics technologies, the company said Sunday.
The logistics arm of Hyundai Motor Group in particular plans to help its clients automatize their warehouses to maximize efficiency, considering the fact that rapid growth in the e-commerce sector has increased the demand for larger and more advanced distribution centers.
Given that Hyundai Glovis has more than 20 years of experience in operating its own warehouses, unlike most of its competitors in the smart logistics market, it also seeks to offer direct warehouse management services to its clients.
In addition, Hyundai Glovis has signed a contract with Swisslog recently to have the exclusive rights to sell the global logistics facility supplier’s PowerStore and Cyclone Carrier automated shuttle systems in the Korean market.
The systems enable automation in storage and retrieval through unmanned transport at warehouses.
Hyundai Glovis plans to introduce Swisslog’s automation systems and various other advanced warehouse control systems to its clients, so that their productivity can increase by up to 30 percent.
“By offering smart logistics services that can innovate distribution centers, we will contribute to the successful operation of our clients,” a Hyundai Glovis official said. “We will continue to show our competitiveness through differentiated business models and our core abilities.”
Hyundai Glovis aims to occupy a 30-percent share of the domestic smart logistics market in the medium term, by attracting manufacturers, retailers, food and beverage firms and drug makers to use its services.
In the long run, it hopes to expand its presence in the global smart logistics market.
As part of its efforts to achieve these goals, the company has decided to set up a separate team comprised of logistics consultants, IT developers and engineers.
